High school girls golf: Edmond North's Grace Griggs shows integrity in Huskies' title repeat

Grace Griggs wanted to forget her first-round total. It was irrelevant.

Edmond North’s senior golfer didn’t even add up her scorecard Wednesday afternoon. No need, she thought, with each hole matching her opponents’ scorecards and club officials doing the math.

When a 79 was figured and posted by Earlywine Golf Club officials, she had no reason to argue. Just go play better the next round.

“I was not about to do as bad,” Griggs said.

First, she had to make a bold correction. Late Wednesday, the math didn’t add up. She thought she shot an 80 and needed to make things right.

Knowing her text message to Huskies coach Brock VanCleave would damage her team’s two-stroke lead the final day, she hit send anyway and hoped things worked out.

Fortunately, they did, even after club officials confirmed their error.

“It’s definitely better than lying,” Griggs said. “I did not want there to be any doubt. If I was questioning what I shot, I wanted to be sure.”

On a day where high school girls golfers around the state competed for state championships, one golfer started the day adding a stroke to her total before even teeing off. She proved that making a move of integrity often pays off in a big way.

Griggs shot her best round of the year — an even-par 72 — to help the Huskies repeat as the Class 6A state champions Thursday afternoon. They edged Jenks by seven strokes behind a team score of 622.

“We’d rather lose with integrity than win and feel bad about it,” VanCleave said. “But, golly, that’s big."

Griggs and star junior Emily Miller combined to finish strong, with Miller shooting a 74 and shooting birdie on the final two holes. Griggs also birdied No. 18, telling VanCleave that meant she shot even. He knew then the title was likely remaining with the Huskies.

It was the perfect ending to a tough season for Griggs.

She grew up a tennis star, but her knees gave out in middle school. She had surgery on both before reaching the eighth grade. It was then that doctors told her to find a new hobby.

She chose golf in the eighth grade.

“Most of these people had played golf, but I just picked up clubs for the first time,” Griggs said. “It took a long time for me to accept it. I was mad about it.

“But I absolutely love golf now and I’ve come to the point where I kind of like it more than tennis, and I loved tennis.”

But even as Griggs improved and earned a scholarship to SMU, her knees still ached. She had double knee surgery over Thanksgiving break. She struggled this spring at times, often shooting around 80 when she knew she was better.

By the time she teed off Thursday with a brace on her left knee, she had earned some good karma. It spread throughout the Huskies’ team.

“There’s so many things you get labeled as a person based off your character and how you act,” Miller said. “For her to say that’s not right, to come back and get her game together, just shows she’s an awesome person and deserves the best.”
