OU softball: Sydney Romero's blast carries Sooners past Cowgirls

STILLWATER — Trucks backed up to the outfield wall at Cowgirl Stadium as OSU fans climbed in for a view, but Sydney Romero’s two-run home run in the third inning cleared everything.

The no-doubt shot down the left field line was the loudest swing in OU’s 7-1 win in the first game of Sunday’s Bedlam doubleheader.

Romero, OU’s leadoff hitter, reached base three times and drove in two runs. The two bats behind her in the lineup, Fale Aviu and Caleigh Clifton, also picked up two RBIs a piece.

Junior right-hander Mariah Lopez improved to 17-1 for the Sooners. She allowed just two hits while striking out nine batters in a complete game. One of the two hits clanged off the right-field scoreboard as OSU first baseman Samantha Show bashed her 16th home run.

The No. 1 Sooners (47-2, 17-0) extended their winning streak to 37 games — the third-longest winning streak in college softball history. Florida and Princeton both accumulated winning streaks of 37 games in 2008 and 1996 respectively.

OU has won the first two games of the weekend set. The Sooners and Cowgirls will play the series finale at 3 p.m. Sunday in Stillwater.
