Former Shawnee standout Eli Davis hospitalized after taking line drive

Former Shawnee High standout Eli Davis, now a redshirt freshman at Kansas, is hospitalized after taking a line drive off the ribs in Sunday's eventual 10-6 Jayhawks win over Texas.

Davis suffered fractured ribs and a lacerated spleen when Texas' Peter Geib lined the ball back to the mound.

Texas' official Twitter account said the ball came off the bat at 108 mph.

Davis continued to pitch, making it through the fourth inning, allowing five hits and four runs — two earned — before exiting the game as his internal bleeding continued.

He's expected to be out six weeks, effectively ending his season.

Davis remains hospitalized as of Monday afternoon, though he took to Twitter to respond to Texas' tweet of the injury.

Davis is 5-3 with a 5.02 ERA in his first season pitching with the Jayhawks after sitting out last year following Tommy John surgery. Kansas has won Davis' last six starts.

Davis, The Oklahoman's Big All-City Player of the Year in 2016, was on the same Shawnee baseball team as current Oklahoma State players Jake Taylor and Tanner Sparks.
