OSMA INAUGURAL PARTY

Top billing: Oklahoma City physician Dr. Larry Bookman was inaugurated as president of the Oklahoma State Medical Association at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Julie Strebel Saxton was emcee.

Blooming room: Red, purple, yellow and white tropical flower centerpieces of orchids, anthurium, protea and palm leaves were on the tables. An art deco motif was used with gold chargers, black table cloths and white pillar candles.

Guests: 300 people attended the event, including Rep. Chad Caldwell, Sen. Carri Hicks, Secretary of Health and Mental Health Jerome Loughridge, Attorney Gen. Mike Hunter and Gov. Kevin Stitt, Ervin Yen, Jim Dunlap, Kathy Keating and former Gov. Frank Keating.

About the new president: Bookman is a founding member of Digestive Disease Specialists and has served as president of several medical organizations, including the Oklahoma County Medical Society, the Oklahoma and Arkansas Endoscopy Society and the Oklahoma State Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He has also served the Oklahoma State Medical Association as a member of the board of trustees as well as on the executive board of the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

In 2010, Bookman founded the Oklahoma County Medical Society Leadership Academy, where 15 young physicians complete a five-month leadership course. He received the Ed L. Calhoon M.D., Award for Leadership in Medicine from the Oklahoma State Medical Association and the Oklahoma County Medical Society’s Don F. Rhinehart MD Lifetime Achievement Award for Medical Service. He has been on the board of the Oklahoma Philharmonic, the Lyric Theater, and served as Arts Festival chairman.

RETIREMENT GALA

Ceremonies: University of Central Oklahoma President Don Betz was recognized among family and friends at an event in honor of his upcoming retirement from the university.

Stars on hand: Among the guests were the speakers Gov. Bill Anoatubby, Oklahoma City University President Martha Burger; Oklahoma Christian University President John deSteiguer, and former UCO president and former Gov. George Nigh. Other guests included Donna Nigh, W. Roger Webb, Ajay Griffin, Mike Osburn, Jeanette Elliott and Rand Elliott. Greg White of the UCO Musical Theatre program was emcee.

Expert entertainment: Performers included Angela Lansdown, Michael Andreaus, Dallas Lish and Erin Clemons, alumni from UCO Musical Theatre.

LAST HURRAH

Party: A day-long event at Harding Charter Preparatory High School was held as the “Last Hurrah Party.” 70 alumni from 1958 to 1968 and 2007 and from those who attended Harding when it was a middle school gathered at the building to take tours and rekindle friendships. Students, alumni and community stakeholders who have provided support also were there.

Last time: Administrators opened the building one last time before Harding Charter Prep relocated. They thanked all those people who have been supportive for the last 16 years. Attending were four of the five school principals: Steven Stefanick, Milo Miller, Carole Kelley and Richard Caram.

ON THE TOWN

Touring: Guests of the Oklahoma Daughters of the American Revolution toured Oklahoma City. They went to the Oklahoma City Ballet, had a book signing of "Goodnight OKC" with illustrator Margaret Reynolds Hoge, and had a guided tour of the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. Mikaya Darden was the memorial guide.

The guests: In Oklahoma City were guests Morgan Meyr Lake, Recording General National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; Gloria Flathom, State Regent, Illinois Society DAR; and Susan G. Tillman, State Regent, Texas Society DAR.

INVITATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Buffet: New members of the Oklahoma City Orchestra League were at the home of Monireh Mohamadi to learn about volunteer opportunities. Kam’s Kookery provided salmon, chicken bites assorted cheeses and mini-chocolate mousse.

Program: League board members gave information about programs, the Symphony Show House date change to June 8, and the Masestro’s Ball.
