Senate confirms Pierson to OU Board of Regents
The state Senate on Wednesday approved the confirmation of a local businessman to the University of Oklahoma’s Board of Regents.
The Senate confirmed Gov. Kevin Stitt’s appointment of Gary Pierson to the board on a 44-to-3 vote a day after Pierson was unanimously approved by the Senate Education Committee.
Republican Sens. Joseph Silk, John Michael Montgomery and Casey Murdock opposed Pierson's appointment.
Pierson — the president and CEO of The Oklahoma Publishing Company, which owned The Oklahoman newspaper until its sale to GateHouse Media in 2018 — will fill a vacancy on the board.
Pierson’s appointment is for less than two years, the remainder of the Bill Burgess’ term on the board. Burgess died in February.
Stitt has appointed two people to OU’s seven-member board of regents. The Senate confirmed the addition of Eric Stevenson to the board earlier this legislative session.
