Class 3A state baseball: Marlow speeds past Washington in semifinals
Marlow coach John Morgan held two arms up to signal stop as Nate Herchock rounded third base, but it was useless. In a game-breaking sixth inning, Herchack blew right through the sign, as did the Outlaws en route the Class 3A state championship game.
“That sounds like Nate,” Marlow senior third baseman Nolan Herchock said of his freshman brother.
That sounds like Marlow baseball.
Speed kills and Washington had no match for the Outlaws’ aggressiveness on the base paths Friday in Marlow’s 15-3 Class 3A state semifinal victory. In Saturday’s championship game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (12:05 p.m.), Marlow will play either Atoka or Kingston in the title game.

A four-run fourth inning was the start, a six-run sixth the finish. In each inning, Marlow (27-7) used its baserunning prowess to pressure the Warriors (22-5) into seven errors.
“If you look at us, we can run a little bit throughout the lineup,” Morgan said. “When you face a team that’s gonna be doing that, you kinda always feel like you’re on the defensive.”
The Outlaws found fortune with their bats, too, lacing 15 hits into open spaces which were accompanied by streaks of blue and white taking the extra base at every opportunity, providing plenty of ammunition for starting pitcher Houston Davis.
“It’s awesome,” said Davis of the run support. Davis tossed a complete game with three strikeouts and drove in five runs.
“It gives you so much confidence. You can just go out there and throw strikes and not have to strike everybody out.”
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Kaden Wilson (3-for-4) led off with a single and Davis roped an RBI double into left field to tie the game. Davis scored on an infield error to put the Outlaws ahead for good.
Devin Orr homered and Harrison Keeler had two hits for Washington. Marlow’s Brennan Morgan drove in three runs, and Nate Herchock and Will Bergner each had two RBI for the Outlaws.
Marlow is making its first state championship appearance in baseball. It’ll be running when it gets there.
“It’s really exciting because the school is going to remember this,” Nolan Herchock said. “We’ve got to make a statement.
“We want to put as much pressure on their defense as we can and we do that through baserunning.”
