GUTHRIE – Famed fiddler and businessman Byron Berline has revealed plans to build a new Double Stop Fiddle Shop & Music Hall in downtown Guthrie, a short distance from the original location.

As previously reported, his landmark music store and performance venue at 121 E Oklahoma Ave. was destroyed in a Feb. 23 fire in downtown Guthrie. The Double Stop was home to Oklahoma's largest collection of violins and bows.

Berline confirmed in an interview that he acquired about a month ago the property at 211 E Oklahoma to turn into the new home of the Double Stop Fiddle Shop & Music Hall.

“It’s just across the street and east,” he said. “It won’t be as big, but it’ll be OK.”

He said the new location will just be one floor, unlike the old two-story location, so there won’t be any stairs to climb.

“We’re not open yet. We’re working on it. It’ll be probably … in the summer sometime before we can get it open, I’m thinking,” Berline said.

“It’s not near ready, but we’re working feverishly to getting it the way we want it so we can use it.”

Berline owns both historic Guthrie buildings that were destroyed in the Feb. 23 blaze: the one housing his fiddle shop and the adjacent one housing Furrow Flowers & Gifts. He said he is not yet sure what he will do with those properties. The buildings were declared a total loss.

In a Facebook message posted today on the Double Stop Fiddle Shop page, Berline and his wife Bette expressed gratitude for the "outpouring of love, sympathy, help, your kind words, donations and your true understanding of our enormous loss.

"We are amazed at the interest in, and generosity of the benefit concerts that have been in our honor. You are all amazing and Oklahoma is an amazing place to live and make music."

Benefit shows on behalf of the Berlines have been organized at the Tower Theatre, OKC Jazz Festival and, earlier this week, at Guthrie's historic Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, where county music icons Vince Gill and Larry Gatlin, Oklahoma red dirt rockers the Turnpike Troubadours and the Byron Berline Band performed the sold-out "The Music Never Dies" benefit Tuesday night. “It’s just amazing the outpouring of generosity,” Berline said. “It’s really heartwarming.”

Even without his music venue, Berline and his band also have continued to play concerts at Guthrie’s Community Church, 512 E Seward Road. The Byron Berline Band will perform its annual Western swing show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Esteemed steel guitar player Jay Dee Maness from California will give a workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and then sit in with the band for the show.

“It’s a really neat place to play,” Berline said. “They’re very nice to let us do that.”
