Class 3A baseball: Atoka claims first boys state title in school history

The ball rocketed off Nolan Burrage’s bat over the “350” painted on the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark fence. It bounced off the tarp-covered guard rail on the top of the left field wall and fell back in play.

By then, Atoka’s Coby Grimsley was almost to home plate. Brenton Beck would follow soon after to give the Wampus Cats a lead in the final inning.

“I thought it was going to go out,” Atoka coach Dwayne Dale said. “I really did.”

With a 5-4 victory over Marlow in the 3A baseball championship game Saturday, Atoka claimed its first boys state title in school history. The Wampus Cats’ only other title came in 1992, secured by the girls basketball team.

Dale bowed his head and fought back tears when asked if the fact that he was a state champion had hit him yet. He coached the last two Wampus Cats baseball teams that had reached the state tournament, in 1999 and 2000.

“This is my first trip to the finals,” he said. “And I think in my career I just didn’t want to go out and lose in the first round.”

His players assured him they wouldn’t.

Atoka and Marlow, making its first finals appearance in baseball program history, had already swapped the lead twice before Burrage stepped to the plate in the seventh inning.

After a strong offensive showing in regionals, Burrage’s bat went cold in the state tournament. He had yet to get on base Saturday.

Dale pulled him over twice to try to settle him down.

Grimsley told him, “Just save me one. Save me one hit.”

“He hits the ball great when I get on base,” Grinsley said. “I don’t know, it’s just something comes to him.”

Maybe it was Grimsely’s presence on second base. Maybe the five-hole hitter was due for hard contact. But whatever it was, Burrage recognized the high fastball and jumped on it.

“I knew I hit it off the sweet spot,” he said, smiling. “I didn’t even feel it. It just kept going.”

Grimsley, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, was excited to tie up the game at four apiece, but then he turned around to see Beck sprinting straight at him. The throw was wide, but he had it beat anyways. Burrage stood on second base flexing both arms.

“Adrenaline pumping, I was just getting it out,” Burrage said. “It was crazy.”
