OU softball: Sooners earn No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament
Oklahoma's 39-game winning streak was enough to earn the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Softball Tournament.
The Sooners (49-2) will open play in the Norman regional on Friday against Maryland-Baltimore County.
"Oh look, we face the No. 1 overall seed," the UMBC Athletics account tweeted during the selection show.
Oklahoma softball will try to escape the fate Virginia men's basketball could not when it faced UMBC as an overwhelming favorite. The Cavaliers became the first No. 1 seed ever to lose to a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
UMBC softball won four consecutive games in the America East Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid despite a 7-11 regular season conference record.
Wisconsin and Notre Dame will join the Sooners and Retrievers in the Norman Regional.
Wisconsin finished the regular season 40-12 and 15-8 in the Big Ten. Notre Dame went 36-16 and 18-6 in the ACC. Oklahoma beat Notre Dame 6-2 on Feb. 14 in the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
Notre Dame and Wisconsin will open play at Marita Hynes Field at 6 p.m. Friday. Oklahoma and UMBC will follow at 8:30 p.m. Friday's winners will meet Saturday in the first of three games.
A limited number of all-session general admission tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday through the OU ticket office.
The winner of OU's regional will face the winner of No. 16 seed Northwestern's regional.
OU will begin its trek to Oklahoma City as the No. 1 seed for just the second time in program history. In 2013, No. 1 seed Oklahoma defeated Tennessee in the Women's College World Series championship.
The Sooners will host a regional for the ninth consecutive season.
UCLA, Washington, Florida State, Florida, Arizona, Minnesota and Alabama round out the top-8 national seeds.
Coach Patty Gasso's squad will be chasing national title No. 5, and its fourth championship in the last seven years.
