Class 2A baseball: No. 1 Silo bunts way to third straight title, undefeated season

SHAWNEE — For the better part of two days, Silo bunted.

With the championship game put on hold over the weekend, the Rebels went back to the basics. Batting practice mostly consisted of placing a pitch onto the ground.

“Sometimes, you have to manufacture a run,” veteran Silo coach Billy Jack Bowen said.

Monday afternoon, Bowen called for the biggest bunt of the season in a surprising moment.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth of a tie game, Bowen told junior lead-off hitter Korben Ford to bunt, despite unfavorable odds. Ford placed the ball on the grass just past the dirt around home plate, forcing Dale third baseman Tanner Collins to field it. There was no play for an out.

No. 1-ranked Silo took the lead for good to complete a 4-3 victory over No. 4 Dale at Shawnee High School for a third straight Class 2A state championship and first undefeated season under Bowen.

“I just tried to do the job like I was told to do,” Ford said. “I had faith in myself.”

The championship is Silo’s 11th in spring. The Rebels also have five fall titles, including the 2018 season. This was also the third straight spring championship win over Dale.

“I’m just so proud of those guys,” Bowen said. “They’re resilient. They’ve done that all season."

Silo (34-0) took a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Ford homered on a 3-1 pitch. He scored again in the third on an RBI groundout by pitcher Carson Atwood. Silo made it 3-0 with an RBI single by Chase Corbin in the fourth.

And Atwood, an Oklahoma commitment, appeared to be rolling.

It was in the sixth that Dale (24-10) finally got going. The Pirates scored on an RBI double from Bryce Crawford. He scored on a passed ball and Jono Johnson added a tying single.

“I felt like I was still throwing good, and they were just hitting it," said Atwood, who got the win as he struck out eight over seven innings. "I'm just glad they didn't take the lead."

In the bottom of the inning, Dale pitcher Carson Hunt lost control with two outs. He walked three straight batters for Ford.

At that point, a bunt felt impossible. That’s why it worked.

“I think everybody was surprised by the bunt,” first-year Dale coach Eddie Jeffcoat said. “Heck of a job by Korben getting it down like he did. It definitely surprised us.”
