The most decorated basketball player in Oklahoma high school history is coming home.

Blake Griffin will be the guest of honor at The Oklahoman’s Best of Preps All-City Sports Awards on June 3 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. Griffin starred at Oklahoma Christian School before going on to the University of Oklahoma and then the NBA.

More than 500 of the best student-athletes from the Oklahoma City metro area will be invited to the Best of Preps awards banquet.

The two-hour program includes a question-and-answer session with Griffin, 20 major awards in various sports plus awards for the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year and Team of the Year.

"We are so pleased Oklahoma's own Blake Griffin has agreed to join us as our featured guest this year for The Oklahoman's Best of Preps awards banquet,” said Kelly Fry, publisher and editor of The Oklahoman.

“It has been wonderful to watch Blake's career grow from Oklahoma Christian School to the Detroit Pistons. His insights on working hard and achieving dreams will resonate with these talented young athletes. He's an excellent role model.”

This will be the third year for the event. Guest speakers for past events were Peyton Manning (2017) and Venus Williams (2018).

Signature sponsors for this year’s event are BancFirst, Integris and OG&E.

All-City athletes from 12 sports will earn an invitation and free entry to the Best of Preps. Doors will open June 3 at 6 p.m. and the event will start at 6:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $50 and include dinner, the awards ceremony and the Q&A with Griffin. All-City athletes will receive an invitation with instructions for claiming their free ticket.

Griffin played for his father, Tommy, and alongside his brother, Taylor, at OCS. The brothers won state titles together in 2004 and 2005. After Taylor left to play at OU, Blake led OCS to state titles in 2006 and 2007.

Blake was named to The Oklahoman’s All-City team three straight years (2005-2007) while twice being named the Little All-City Player of the Year. In 2007, he was selected as a McDonald’s All-American and named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

After leaving OCS, Griffin played at OU, where in 2009 he was named a consensus All-American and was the National Player of the Year.

Griffin went on to become the overall No. 1 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, being selected by the Los Angeles Clippers.

After missing his first season with a knee injury, Griffin was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year after the 2010-11 season. Griffin also won the NBA Slam Dunk title that year when he famously jumped over a Kia sedan. A six-time All-Star, Griffin was traded to the Detroit Pistons during the 2017-18 season.

Over his 10-year NBA career, Griffin has averaged 21.9 points per game and 9 rebounds per game.

In addition to his basketball prowess, Griffin is quite the comedian and pitchman. His commercials for Kia, FootLocker and GameFly have millions of views on YouTube. Griffin has also tried his hand at stand-up comedy and might pursue that after his basketball career.

Blake continues to impact kids in the state of Oklahoma through his foundation that was established in 2016. The Team Griffin Foundation is a 501c3 organization that is committed to young men and women— providing them with opportunities to develop and showcase their individual skills and learn essential lessons of life, competition, and hard work.
