Woman facing manslaughter charge in fatal airborne crash
A Midwest City woman has been charged with causing an airborne car crash that killed a woman.
Cassandra Michelle Nail, 33, is facing a charge of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Angela Winchester, 41, on Sept. 23.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Nail was speeding west on Interstate 40 and “weaving in and out of traffic indiscriminately" before the accident, according to a court affidavit.
Witnesses saw her vehicle swerve from the far left of the highway across all lanes of traffic to take the Sooner Road exit. The maneuver caused other drivers to hit their brakes to avoid colliding with her.
Nail failed to round a curve on the exit and struck the curb, launching her Dodge Charger into the air, troopers said. Winchester, of Luther, was sitting in the driver’s seat of her Kia Rondo on southbound Center Drive when the Charger struck her vehicle.
Nail's car hit the driver’s side of Winchester’s car, which was stopped at a stop sign at the time of the wreck, according to the affidavit.
Winchester’s mother, Nancy Peters, 66, was sitting in the front passenger’s seat and suffered significant injuries. The victim’s 14-year-old daughter was in the back seat and received treatment at OU Medical Center before release. Nail was treated at a Midwest City hospital.
Highway Patrol analysis showed Nail was driving about 84 mph on the highway leading up to the crash, though the speed limit there is 60 mph. Troopers found her car was traveling about 59 mph on the service road less than a second before impact, according to the affidavit.
“The Charger was airborne for a significant distance before striking the ground and then (Winchester’s vehicle),” troopers reported. “Based on the lack of interactions with the ground, it appeared that the Charger was partially airborne at the time it struck the driver’s side of the Rondo.”
The affidavit reported no evidence that Nail was intoxicated during the collision.
Winchester was a mother of two children and the owner of a hair salon in Luther.
