The reality is hard to escape for Oklahoma baseball.

After the Sooners’ 8-2 loss to Baylor to open the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown BallpThe reality is hard to escape for Oklahoma baseball.

Going into the tournament, D1Baseball.com had the Sooners as the last team out of the NCAA Tournament field, with the chances of a strong tournament pushing them into a regional.

An 0-2 performance — or even a 1-2 performance if it didn’t include a victory over either the Bears or Oklahoma State, two teams in the Sooners’ side of the bracket that are safely in the field — would figure to leave Oklahoma on the outside looking in Monday when the pairings are announced.

“This is a game of failure,” Sooners coach Skip Johnson said. “You’ve got to deal with it pitch to pitch and you’ve got to take the positive, as much as you can, out of it.”

Oklahoma will play either Oklahoma State or TCU at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

Sooners sophomore Cade Cavalli, who started on the mound, allowing four runs in five innings, said he was still confident that his team would turn things around, though acknowledged that Oklahoma had their backs to the wall.

The Sooners started the season 21-4, leading to talk not just of getting into the tournament but hosting a regional.

But over the last two months, Oklahoma is just 12-18, pushing them to the brink.

“You saw us at the beginning of the year,” Cavalli said. “We dominated teams. That’s still in us. We can go do that. We’ve just got to get out of ourselves right now.

“We’ve just got to go do it. It’s either win or go home at this point. We’re going to see what we’re made of these next couple games. It’ll be a good test for us.”

The Sooners found themselves in a quick hole, with Baylor star Shea Langeliers’ two-run home run in the first.

Oklahoma’s only real threat in the first six innings came in the fourth when Brady Lindsly and Tyler Hardman had back-to-back one-out hits to give the Sooners two runners in scoring position.

But Baylor starter Paul Dickens struck out Justin Mitchell and Brandon Zaragoza to end the threat.

In the bottom half, Baylor’s Andy Thomas took a sinker that didn’t sink from Cavalli out of the park for a two-run home run to put the Bears up 4-0.

“That was a big momentum swing for us,” Johnson said. “When you don’t take the momentum because they had the momentum, it really separates you.”
