OU softball: Sydney Romero among three Collegiate Player of the Year finalists

Oklahoma third baseman Sydney Romero is one of three finalists for Collegiate Player of the Year, USA Softball announced Thursday.

Romero is the only hitter to make the final cut. UCLA pitcher Rachel Garcia and James Madison pitcher Megan Good are the other finalists.

Romero would become the second Sooner to win the award. Former pitcher Keilani Ricketts was the back-to-back recipient in 2012 and 2013. Romero's sister, Sierra Romero, won the award at Michigan in 2016.

Sydney Romero ranks fourth nationally in total bases (154), 11th in hits (79) 16th in slugging percentage (.837), 20th in batting average (.429) and 21st in home runs (18). Romero has walked 11 times while striking out just eight times in 184 at-bats.

The senior is Oklahoma's all-time leader in at-bats. She ranks second in hits, doubles and total bases behind Norrelle Dickerson, Lisa Carey and Lauren Chamberlain.

USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year is considered the most prestigious honor in the sport. The winner will be announced May 28.
