Health workshop is planned

The Wellness Now Coalition’s Faith Based Workgroup will host a free "Church Ministry Academy" from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 8 at Metro Tech Campus Conference Center, 1900 Springlake Drive.

Shante Fenner, co-chairman of the work group, said this year's theme is "Connecting the Pieces." The event will include a discussion about the link between health and faith and how to connect resources in the community.

Church leaders and members will learn tools for establishing an effective health ministry that focuses on the following topics: mental health first aid, men’s health, caregiving and understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia. Taylor Conner, an Oklahoma State University extension educator, will offer tips on nutritious cooking. Dr. LaNita Wright will offer a "Let’s Talk" segment focusing on tobacco, nutrition and physical activity policies.

Crossings will host single moms' conference

The "Thrive Gathering: Single Moms Conference" will be June 21-22 at Crossings Community Church, 14600 N Portland. The conference, founded by Arise Ministries of Edmond, is designed with single moms in mind and is designed to address the unique challenges they face in their relationships and while raising their families. The ultimate goal is to come alongside single mothers to provide them with resources and encouragement to help them create healthy homes.

Thrive Gathering will include three keynote sessions featuring Pam Kanaly, co-founder of Arise Ministries; Kim Heinecke, writer and speaker for Arise Ministries; Shelley Pulliam, Arise Ministries' executive director; Alice Richardson, an associate pastor of Prospect Church; and Lina Abujamra, founder of Living with Power Ministries.Additional breakout sessions will feature women from a variety of professional and personal backgrounds, including Lisa Leininger, Stacey Johnson, Melissa Hiett, Janelle Reed, Christy Johnson, Tia Murry, Amber Given and Beth Brown. Their topics will vary to include everything from dating as a single mom to raising children to dealing with rejection and betrayal. Other breakout sessions will include topics such as finance and self-defense taught by Gary Olson and Jason Scarbrough. The conference will include opportunities to connect with other single moms, enjoy encouraging messages and inspirational worship.

"We’re excited to celebrate this 15th year anniversary. Over 16,000 moms and children have been impacted over the years with mothers coming from all over the country," Pulliam said in a news release. "It is a blessing to experience women of all backgrounds coming together and pursuing provision, friendship and confidence. We could not be more thankful for this opportunity to empower communities in this special way."The conference will be from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m. June 21 and 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 22. Tickets are available for $30 per person through June 14. Admission includes a catered lunch. Child care for children 10 and younger is $5 per family. Group rates are available for 10 or more.
