Westmoore’s Patterson to take over at Mustang

Mustang’s search for a new baseball coach was short, but well worth it.

The Broncos landed one of the area’s top coaches in Westmoore’s Joe Patterson, a source confirmed to The Oklahoman on Saturday. The Mustang News first reported Patterson’s hiring.

The move will not be official until next month’s school board meeting.

Patterson took over at Westmoore in 2016 and led the Jaguars to the Class 6A state tournament each season. They reached back-to-back state championship games in 2017 and 2018.

Patterson is an Owasso graduate who played at Oral Roberts, Seminole State and Texas A&M. He’s coached with USA Baseball.

He replaces Keanon Simon, who recently resigned two years after his team beat Westmoore for the Class 6A title.

Four 2020 prospects chosen for MLB program

Four of Oklahoma’s top MLB draft prospects from the 2020 high school class have been selected to spend a good portion of the summer in MLB’s Prospect Development Pipeline.

Westmoore’s Jace Bohrofen, Mustang’s Dax Fulton, Norman’s Cade Horton and Owasso’s Nate Wohlgemuth were all selected to participate in the program at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The PDP League is scheduled for June 13-July 4.

The program was founded in 2017 and serves as the primary identification opportunity for the USA Baseball 18U National Team. Also, it will serve as a feeder for the new MLB All-Star High School Prospect Game as part of MLB’s All-Star Week festivities.
