A deadly tornado touched down in El Reno Saturday evening, part of a larger storm that sent residents across the state taking shelter.

Two people are confirmed dead in El Reno, where the tornado hit a motel, trailer park and several businesses near Highway 81 and 66.

El Reno police have asked the public to stay off the roads and allow emergency services to assess the damage.

“I think El Reno Oklahoma needs a lot of prayers, it has been a traumatic incident,” said El Reno Mayor Matt White, adding that several people had been transported to the hospital.

American Budget Inn and the Skyview Trailer Park were two of the hardest hit areas when the tornado arrived around 10:31 p.m.

“You could hear the roar and everything when it came through,” said Richard Griffin, a resident of the trailer park.

Loyd Roberts, of Burnet, Texas, said he was asleep in the motel when the roof fell in.

“That is what woke me up. The roof caved in, desk flipped over, the room looked like a bomb hit it. I pulled the sheet rock off of me and started looking for people. All I saw was people with scrapes and bruises,” Roberts said.

El Reno's VFW Post 382 offered sleeping accommodations for anyone affected by the tornado.

"If anyone is in need of a place to go that was affected by tonight’s tornado please come to the VFW, 1515 S. Rock Island. Please bring any sleeping bedding you might need," the group posted on its Facebook page.

The storm barreled into the metro after 11 p.m., triggering tornado warnings west of Oklahoma City, along with neighborhoods from near the State Capitol to north Norman.

Businesses along 23rd Street near Classen Boulevard were damaged with broken windows and missing roofs.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department said emergency personnel responded to calls to check power lines and fire alarm activations, but there are no reports of extensive damage or injuries in the city.

"We are currently on scene in the 3600 block of northwest 12th Street. where a structure was damaged by a falling tree.  There was no one home and no injuries have been reported," Capt. David Macy told reporters early Sunday morning.

The storm continued east and developed another tornado in Tulsa and Broken Arrow after midnight.

This is a developing story.
